NCIAVHR Concludes Workshop on Trials for Human Rights Violators

Aden │ August 10, 2025

Today, the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) concluded a two-day workshop in Aden, the interim capital. This workshop focused on the nature of trials for individuals accused of human rights violations and received support from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The event gathered 25 participants, including Commission members, assistant investigators, representatives from the judiciary, the Office of the Attorney General, and civil society organizations active in promoting accountability and combating impunity.

This workshop is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and enhance the path toward accountability for serious human rights violations in Yemen. Its goals are to undermine the policy of impunity and to follow up on both official and unofficial initiatives in this regard. The aim is to equip participating entities to fulfill their roles in securing justice for victims through accountability and fair trials.

The workshop program included discussions on the historical background of trials related to human rights violations, the evolution of rights protection and accountability, and a review of international, regional, and national experiences in this area. It also featured a presentation of the Commission’s vision regarding trials, the types of serious and grave violations, and the roles of various stakeholders in establishing an environment conducive to prosecutions.

Discussions explored patterns of violations, particularly those targeting civilians and their physical integrity. Participants considered mechanisms to improve the environment for trials in human rights cases, ensuring procedural clarity, and identifying the needs of judicial bodies for technical support and capacity building.

The Commission emphasized that this event marks a significant step in the accountability process and reinforces the role of the national judiciary in delivering justice for victims. The Commission underscored that the outcomes of the workshop will enhance the effectiveness of national efforts to protect human rights, by Yemen’s obligations under international conventions.
