Socotra | 27 January 2026
On Tuesday, in the capital of the Socotra Archipelago Governorate, the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) held a collective hearing, hearing testimonies from over thirty victims who experienced various human rights violations at different times. This event was part of the Commission’s ongoing field mission to the region.
During the session, victims described violations including arbitrary arrests, dismissals from employment, and mistreatment. They also reported abuses against journalists and political organization members, along with infringements on their rights to liberty, security, free expression, peaceful assembly, as well as rights to work and education.
The hearing was chaired by Judges Hussein Al-Mashdali, Mohammed Tulyan, Nasser Al-Awthali, and Ishraq Al-Muqtari. Victims’ statements were recorded, with their accounts documented carefully, emphasizing their humanitarian suffering, in line with legal standards.
Victims also presented demands for justice, reparations, and guarantees against future violations, highlighting the harm caused.
The Commission reaffirmed its pledge to continue public hearings—especially on forced displacements and dismissals—and to gather evidence related to all violations. These efforts aim to uncover truths, enhance accountability, and support justice and human rights.
Additionally, the Commission called on government authorities to fulfill their legal duties, address the effects of violations, and protect public rights and freedoms, adhering to the Constitution, laws, and international commitments.
