NCIAVHR’s Deputy Chairman Discusses with Minister of Interior Prison Conditions and Human Rights

The Minister of Interior, Major General Ibrahim Haydan, discussed with the Deputy Chairman of the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) Judge Hussein Al-Mashdali, and Commission member Judge Ishraq Al-Muqatri, several issues related to human rights, prisons, and reforms in Yemeni governorates.

Judge Hussein Al-Mashdali addressed the conditions of inmates in branches of the Rehabilitation and Reform Authority in government-controlled governorates and improving conditions in several prisons, especially the Ash-Shabaka Prison in the city of At-Turbah south of Taiz governorate, emphasizing the importance of establishing a new building for the prison, and improving services in other prisons in Al-Dhale’e and Ma’rib governorates.

The meeting also discussed activating accountability and internal oversight for some security personnel suspected of violations, and cooperation in enhancing the continuous capacity building for the security personnel.

The Deputy Chairman emphasized the necessity of coordination and continuous communication between the Commission and the Ministry of Interior due to their common goals to ensure the guaranteed rights of inmates and detainees and improve their environments in compliance with national and international laws.

On his part, Minister of Interior Major General Ibrahim Haydan affirmed the ministry’s interest in human rights issues and its committment to cooperate with all relevant parties to protect human rights and enhance the rule of law.

During the meeting, Major General Haydan pointed out the government’s support for the Commission’s work and providing all necessary facilitations to carry out its tasks with neutrality and professionalism, praising the efforts made by the Commission since its inception in investigating violations and inspecting detention centers.
