NCIAVHR Uncovers Widespread Violations in Al-Musaymir, Lahj
Lahj | May 27, 2025
As part of its ongoing efforts to investigate human rights violations, the National Commission to Investigate Alleged Violations of Human Rights (NCIAVHR) conducted a field visit today to the Al-Musaymir District in Lahj Governorate. The mission aimed to assess the dire humanitarian conditions and document abuses affecting civilians in frontline and conflict-affected areas.
During the visit, the Commission recorded numerous violations against the right to life and physical integrity, particularly in the areas of Habeel Hanash, Ahamah, Makibin, and the district center. Evidence and testimonies were collected regarding civilian deaths during large-scale attacks in Al-Sarahnah, Qayf, and Joul Madram.
The team also interviewed forcibly displaced residents from the villages of Al-Qurein, Murayb, and Habeel Suwayda, documenting their experiences and the circumstances that led to their displacement.
Commission members Judges Sabah Al-Alwani, Ishraq Al-Maqtari, and Jihad Abdulrasoul, along with field researchers, conducted in-depth interviews with 174 individuals—both men and women—who included victims and eyewitnesses. The documented violations included direct attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, landmine contamination in roads and farmlands, and cases of arbitrary detention.
The team inspected damaged private and public property, including destroyed homes, a demolished school, the Aqan Bridge, the Orphanage Mosque, and the Al-Tanan culvert in Aqan.
The findings highlighted the severe and ongoing impact of the conflict on local communities, with many villages suffering from a lack of basic services due to continued shelling along active frontlines. Fear and instability remain daily realities for residents.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to field-based investigations, giving voice to victims, uncovering the truth, and holding perpetrators accountable. It called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and prioritize the protection of civilians from the devastating consequences of violence.
